The new Suvarnabhumi airport is now
open for all domestic and international flights. Latest News: The Thai government has approved re-opening of the Don Muang Intl airport as the second Bangkok airport. Don Muang airport re-opened on March 25th, 2007.
The following airlines are operating from Don Muang airport:
Nok Air
domestic flights & One-Two-Go
domestic flights.
Bangkok - Don Muang Intl (DMK):
Location:
24 km/15 Miles NE of the City centre.
Airport
Overview: Don Muang Airport has 3 terminals. Terminal 1 & Terminal 2, used as before the opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport, are currently not
in use. Terminal 3 is in active use as a domestic terminal.
|
By Taxi & Limo: |
|
Regular Taxis: |
Licensed and metered city taxis
(with black and yellow, not black and white, plates) can be flagged down outside
departures. THB 300-350 from the meter/30-90 mins. Overcharging is common. If
the traffic is very busy in Bangkok, many drivers prefer not to use the meter
and you must bargain for the price. You should not accept more than 70% of his
first offer. Do not enter the taxi before fixing the price. Taxis are subject to
a THB 50 airport surcharge, and if you wish to use the express motorway
(recommended) a further THB70. For return to the airport expect to pay ~THB
400-450.
|
|
Notes from a Traveller Apr 2010: |
The last time I used DMK it had a
taxi dispatching system just like BKK. I NEVER bargain with taxi drivers. It's
meter or not at all. And as far as I'm concerned, even an attempt to bargain a
fare means it's a dishonest driver, and who knows what other scams he may try to
pull. If you wave down a taxi, always lean in and tell him where you're going.
If he nods yes, get in the taxi and 99% of the time he switches on the meter and
off you go. |

By Bus: |
|
Regular public buses: |
some air-conditioned operate on various routes and can be caught from the road in front of the airport. |
|
Public buses Nos 4,10,13 & 29 (AC): |
operate every 15-20 mins 0500-2100. 100 Baht/40-60 mins. Non AC bus operates on this route 24hrs.
3.5 Baht. Takes 60 mins. Non air conditioned buses do not
allow heavy luggage. |
By Train: The Train
station is very close to the Airport. To the city THB 5 Baht, takes ~60 mins,
however it is reported to be crowded and difficult to use.
Notes from a Traveller Apr 2010:
Personally, I don't have any problem using the trains or find them at all
confusing, but it's true they're very slow. Every train from the north stops at
Don Muang.

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Intl
(BKK):
Location:
25 km/15 Miles ESE of the city centre.
Airport Overview: One huge terminal divided into concourses (A to G).
Level 4 (top floor) is departures - Intl flights to the right, domestic
to the left. Level 3 is for shops & restaurants. Level 2 is
arrivals. Level 1 is for the Public Transportation Center for the few buses that run from the terminal. Most buses operate from the bus terminal which is
some distance from the terminal and reached by a free shuttle. Car Rental
Companies have desks here too. Note:
Access to arrival services such as rental car desks and limo companies is not
easy unless you are an arriving passenger. This is because there is no return to
these arrival areas after passing through. Make sure you visit these
desks/sevices as you pass them. The other alternative is to get a security
secort to take you back through.
|
By Taxi: |
|
General: |
Taxis wait
outside on the level below arrivals (level 1). There is a desk nearby where vouchers can be collected. Pay the driver directly. There are frequently
lines/queues at this desk.
Notes from a Traveller April 2010:
Taxis have now been moved back down to Level 1 (one floor below Arrivals). No prepaid vouchers from the desk, but you get a chit which gives the driver's name and a number to call if you have complaints. The metered fare to most locations in central Bangkok is
THB 250 or less (THB 220 to Sukhumvit), plus THB 70 in tolls, plus THB 50 airport surcharge. Total should come to around
THB 350, paradoxically about the same whether you're going to Sukhumvit, Silom or Banglamphu, due to the way the expressways are laid out. Never more than
THB 400. If the driver even tries to negotiate a fixed fare, you should change taxis. I don't know about the
THB 700 maxi-taxis since I've never used one - officially they should also go at the metered rate. Late at night or early morning you could tell the driver not to use the highway and save the
THB 70. This will not add significantly to the time you take.
|
|
Typical
Fares: |
To the city THB 300-400 (depending on area. Sukhumvit road is closer to 300) +
tolls of around THB 70.
Airport
surcharge THB 50.
Takes 30-50 mins. Check at
Visitor Information, or use a pre-paid taxi. For people with lots of bags (3
people & 3 large bags) a regular taxi will probably be too small. You
will need a larger maxi-taxi which charges THB 700 to the city. They will
arrange this for you at the desk. |
|
Meter Costs: |
Basic Public Taxis
cost by distance: 1 km THB 35, 2 km THB 40, 3 km THB 45, 5 km THB 55, 7
